Russia's Sevmash shipyard work to increase in 2014

Karl Soper, Washington DC - IHS Jane's Navy International 03 February 2014

In a statement released on 30 January, Mikhail Budnichenko, general director of Russian shipbuilder Sevmash, said that the company's defence orders for 2014 will be double that of 2013.

Some increased funding for Sevmash in 2014 is likely to be directed at the refit and modernisation of the Kirov-class nuclear-powered missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov . Work began recently on the vessel, which has been laid up at Severodvinsk since 1999.

Speaking to representatives of the shipyard's trade union, Budnichenko also said new ship construction will require up to 8,500 additional workers. According to state news agency ITAR-TASS, Sevmash currently employs more than 26,000 workers.
