She was constructed in 1956 at the shipyard Uljanik in Pula, Croatia. Together with larger “Galeb”, “Vis” was the only one designed exclusively for the commanding purposes. From the early design phase they were meant to become elite commander vessels of the Yugoslav Navy, to serve Tito, famous president of Yugoslavia. Highest ranking navy officers during their service in the former Yugoslavia served on the “Vis”. Every time the “Galeb” sailed outside the Adriatic Sea, or was under reconstruction, “Vis” would become the commander-in-chief's vessel. During that time, “Vis” also welcomed numerous celebrities from show-business and politics, among other, the members of the British royal family were accommodated on “Vis” during the several occasions.
